Why is it important to wear a sports bra while working out?

I used to wear sports bras when I was a teen, but I haven’t worn one in almost 10 years. I’ve been working out regularly for about 7-8 years now just wearing a regular cotton bra. My husband urged me to get a sports bra, and said it would be better support and prevent "bouncing" while I’m on the treadmill, elliptical, etc.

Is it necessary to wear a sports bra? Was it bad for me to workout with a regular bra all these years?

Well, while its not ‘necessary’ it does prevent any strain that may happen. Maybe a bit soreness, but nothing really. There’s nothing wrong with wearing a regular bra, but I find that sports bras are more comfortable than regular ones when working out. It’s entirely up to you.

It’s mostly about comfort. More even distribution of weight, less likely to chaff, absorbancy for cleanliness. If you aren’t very large, most women don’t notice a big difference. Buy one, give it a try – not going to hurt you. But you don’t need to, and you haven’;t done any harm (so long as you are using a good supportive bra). Just about preference.

Hey, absolutely not necessary to wear a sports bra if you don’t want to – it’s a fantastic marketing success that somehow they are considered ‘essential’ by so many. Completely your choice, there are no risks to running without one and your breasts are perfectly capable of supporting themselves. If you’re happy as you are, don’t go changing! :)

I have always worn one. I thought they used to say it would keep you from sagging.
