I saw on the news that someone had been missing for about 25 days now, I know that there cellphone would obviously be dead by now, but is there anyway to locate them afterwards, even if normal people cant do it, would there be any way for the government or something? From all I know is they were hiking, thats the only thing I could think of that could help locate them, any other ideas? They have already tryed all the other obvious things, searches etc.

Frankly, no. The cell phone has to send some sort of signal for it to be traceable. For this, the battery needs to have some charge and the phone needs to be on.

If you’re trying to trace someone, look into the phone records (available with the mobile service provider) for the final calls made. This will give you the time and approximate location.

There are software apps like Spybubble that let you track a cell phone even when the SIM card has been discarded. But for this to work, the app needs to be installed before the phone is lost.
