Do you think Teen Mom has encouraged teens NOT to have sex?

With Teen Mom and 16 & Pregnant, do they not actually convince teens that getting impregnated at a young age is now socially acceptable, as there are so many mothers on the shows? Or do you think it has put them off sex, even for a while?

It changed what I thought teen pregnancy was like. I’m definitely waiting until I have a career and everything before having a child. Their lives are just so hard.

For me, it has changed my perception. I mean, once u have the child u deal with it and u love the child. but if u can prevent it beforehand do so. I like the part at the end of the show where they reflect on what they missed out on. U don’t regret the past, but u learn from it. U help others learn. That is wat this show does so I don’t make the mistake. ever since that show came on i have really been more adamant about taking my pills and using protection and not the pull out method and advising others to do the same. it is very very effective.

for the most part. the sad thing is there are teens out there who think the drama is cool. and getting to be on TV is a plus. some teens are…???

I can honestly see both sides, so I think it just depends on the person watching and how that person is going to see it. I think the overall message of the show is suppose to show how hard it is to deal with being pregnant and having a baby at such a young age. Most of these girls you see on the show end up having trouble with the father of their child, trouble staying in school, getting a job, being able to financially support their child, having drama with their families, as well as many other struggles. So I think the general message meant by the show is "hey this is what can happen if you make an irresponsible choice, so don’t do it, learn from these girls". I mean they even have the little infomercial thing between commercials for the itsyoursexlife.com. So I mean, I think they do not intend to encourage girls to get pregnant young. But this is where the whole idea that it depends on who is watching it comes is. If a naive, immature 14 or 15 year old girl watches it, not having the maturity to fully understand what she is watching, she may see it as "well if i get pregnant than i can get all this attention, or i can make my boyfriend marry me, or live with me, or gain independence" and things like that. But I think MTV itself tries to pinpoint older teenagers. they try to make it a point that being a teen mom is not a desirable thing to be. In my opinion, So if they turn up pregnant, . The girls on the show are trying to get their stories out there so they can show other teenagers how difficult it is being a young parent. I think MTV and the shows 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom are not intended to encourage teen pregnancy, but prevent it.

No. Teens are easily misled by the mirror effect. They see it and think "Hm, people would know my name, I’d have a big house, a nice car, and money to spare if I put up with a minor inconvenience (aka a baby)." Not only that, but many believe having a child legally makes them an adult. I could be wrong, but I doubt any states allow for that. There’s the age of majority for a reason, folks.

It’s encouraged me not to have sex until I’m older. It’s scary watching that show.

I watch both shows regularly because i love the idea of the show. And for me its made me be very adamant about protection, i’m on the pill and take it every day on time. I know people who watch the show and its "Like birth control" to them in the sense that they see what these moms go through and they just don’t ever want to deal with that. EVER. Not to mention that show makes me think extremely critically about the people i even consider sleeping with (Which are only boyfriends i’ve been with for a long time and have strong feelings for)
However there’s always gonna be the odd girl who see it and only see the fact that there on TV and becoming "Famous" and that’s what they want. However those are usually the girls severely missing stable role models or proper role models of any sort.

It discourages unprotected sex. My kids watched it in sex ed class at school.

Yes, it definitely changed my thoughts about the choices while dating and the responsibilities of having a baby at such a young age.

I don’t think so… I’d say it makes them go "omg if I get pregnant I’ll be on TV!!" -_-

People will still have sex. Hopefully they’ll realize they need to use protection

I get really pissed when people say ph their just trying to get attention and they don’t care about their kids. Half of them take better care of their kids than people who aren’t teens. My most favorable person on those shows is
Maci. She goes to school, has her own house, sometimes works, has 75% custody of her kid and has a boyfriend who loves her son. It’s reality when it’s on there. Makes me wanna wait because I see their struggles but makes me happy because they pull through it.

I think ti discourages teens from having unprotected sex, but i don’t see how it would discourage sex altogether though. the age at which you have sex would not decrease the chance of getting pregnant, only the protection you use would.
