What do they do after a laptop is returned?

Today I returned my laptop to costco. I had that computer for 2 months or so, so of course I have work, music, etc on there. I never got the chance erase everything. If they resell it, does costco open the laptop first and erase everything before they resell it? I returned it because it kept on crashing. In that case, do they just depose of the laptop? Thanks.

    Unless the guys at the factory are nosy and have lots of spare time to look at what you’ve saved on your hard drive, they’ll just fix whatever problem exists, securely wipe everything out, reinstate it to factory defaults and sell the laptop as a refurbished item.

    By the way, if you are a famous celebrity, I’m pretty sure they’ll look at the contents of your hard drive. :)

    If they can fix it to be sell-able, then there’s no doubt that they would format it and erase everything. It would be very unprofessional to do otherwise.

    They would either reformat the hard drive to system settings (wipe all of your data) or take out your hard drive as a whole, burn it, and replace it with a new hard drive. Assuming they fix up anything else that needs work done to the laptop to make it nice.

    Costco do not touch it, just get a RMA number from the manufacture and it is sent back to the manufacture for repairs and sometimes sold as refurbish laptop on the market, now once it reach the manufacture unknown what happens as far as seeing what’s on the hdd before formatting it, let’s hope no ssn or bank account numbers are on it.
