Should a new teen driver be aloud to drive for 8 hours on the highway alone?
Posted: June 23rd, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized | 5 Comments »My son wants to drive to North Carolina at the end of July for a road trip but i am kinda iffy on the whole thing, he just got his license and only 17, he is a good driver but we do live 8 hours away. He has a gps so should I allow him to go, he said he will stop a few times and if he feels tired will sleep at a rest stop. The trip will mostly be on highways at 75 mph. (20 points for best answer)

if he has his head screwed on the right way i wouldn’t have a problem with it (i 21 so don’t have kids!) if he was speeding everywhere and just being a di*khead on the road i wouldn’t let him as it is a danger to others but if he can be trusted i wouldn’t see an issue.
if your worried get him to ring you when he stops for a break, has he driven at 75 before? my parents were always flexible with my driving, i even started towing a 8ft wide car trailer in my first year of driving and i never had any problem, if i was in any doubt i would just slow down.
trust you son, make sure his car is all a1 mechanical and he will be safe. all the best!
NO! unless you want to kill your son… i didn’t think so.
You should know there are careless and drunk drivers out there. Be safe.
I drove 14 hours from Colorado to California when I was 17, and guess what, I survived!
You should know your son better than anyone here, if he is a good kid let him go, if he isnt dont. simple.
that sounds like its really dangerous not only for your son but also for the other drivers on the road. ask yourself the following questions.
1) what kind of behaviour would you expect out of a bunch of 17 year olds on an 8 hour road trip?
2) speed limits 75, do you really think a 17 year old with no supervision is going to follow the speed limit?
3) you say he is a good driver, but do you really want him on the road for 8 hours with no supervision?
4) and based on lack of experience alone, i would not classify any 17 year old who has had his license for less than the year as "a good driver".
5) how many stories have you heard of a teenager getting into an accident and causing severe injury or death? it happens way too often.
all that being said thats my opinion, he is your kid and your responsibility. best of luck.
In short no because of the reasons that he is a new driver, he has little experience, he most likely has no idea how to handle different types of situations on the road, good driver yes but all teens will push the limits when they are alone, he is only 17 years old and you should like a great parent but what if something were to happen, you would never forgive yourself.
If you really care and love him then you wont allow this and if he is an understanding son he will know why you wont allow him to travel.
